My (Simplified) Winter Beauty Routine

I’ve always loved the idea of having a streamlined beauty routine, but I haven’t always taken the right steps to move in that direction. With the winter season approaching and some travel planned for the end of the month, I decided it was the perfect opportunity to carefully edit the products on my vanity. I’ve been having a lot of fun just using my winter beauty capsule, so I thought I would share with y’all what I’ve been using.

Shower time is super quick and easy. Scrub down with Beautycounter Everyday Body Wash, shave with Beautycounter Shaving Cream, and then immediately moisurize with The Honest Company Organic Body Oil (combined with The Honest Company Face + Body Lotion). I’ve been applying my body oil before leaving the shower for years. This is the best way to lock in moisture while your skin is still damp. All of these products are more than enough to keep my skin moisturized and smooth for well over 24 hours. And how do I know this?  I’m a SAHM so daily showers are optional. I like to tell myself I’m saving water, but really I’m just choosing coffee time over cleaning time.

I only wash my hair 1-2x times a week. As I mentioned in 7 Steps To Longer, Stronger Hair, this is one of the easiest ways to get healthier hair. But when the time comes that my hair needs a good shampooing, I rub  Lani Tropical Hair Treatment into the ends of my hair at least an hour before I hop in the shower. Once all the yummy coconut oil goodness soaks in, I reach for Beautycounter Everyday Shampoo and Conditioner. Holy moly, lemme tell y’all, I am OBSESSED with this shampoo. It suds up like crazy, leaving your hair squeeky clean, but also super soft and hydrated. If you haven’t had good luck with sulfate-free shampoo, this is the one to switch to. Once I’m out of the shower, I detangle with this wide-toothed wood comb. And that’s it! No hair dryer, no heat styling, no products. I’ve noticed that when I allow my hair to air dry, it’s way less static-y, even when I’m constantly pulling off winter hats. After a couple days, I’ll sprinkle in Zabana Essentials Dry Glow Shampoo. It has a little bit of shimmer to it so it doesn’t give you that matte, dry shampoo look at the roots.

When you’re talking about beauty, you gotta mention the basics. Switching to safer toothpaste and a non-aluminum deodorant were my earliest moves when I was greening up my vanity a couple years ago. I’ve been using The Honest Company Toothpaste for a year, and I’ve recently upgraded to a bamboo (recycleable) toothbrush. LAVANILA The Healthy Deodorant is another product I’ve been wearing for years. I don’t wear perfume, but I always get compliments on how I smell thanks to the delicious vanilla coconut botanical fragrance blend.

To say that I’m obsessed with skincare, is probably an understatement. But I was starting to think all the complicated regimens weren’t doing me any favors. So now I cleanse only in the evening with Josie Maran Argan Cleansing Oil, moisturize with the glorious miracle oil that is Vintner’s Daughter Active Botanical Serum, and treat any blemishes with Alba Botanica Fast Fix for a Pimple or this tiny sample of Kypris Clearing Serum. Mornings are basically the same routine minus the cleansing oil. A couple splashes of cool water are enough.

This is off topic, but have you ever noticed that some beauty bloggers’ product photos always feature brand new, perfect products. Sometimes it makes me wonder if they’ve actually used the product at all! Well with these photos, you don’t have to guess ’cause everything looks pretty rough. I normally don’t wear makeup everyday. During our four straight days of rain, I kept it au natural. But when I do have a couple extra minutes, I go for le no makeup look. Once my oil serum has had about 5-10 minutes to soak in, I smooth on a couple pumps of Boscia BB Eye Brightner all over my entire face. It’s extremely moisurizing with pretty good coverage. Not my fav product, what I’m trying to use it all up so I can move on to my stored Beautycounter Dew Skin, Tint Skin, and Cover Up. Josie Maran Coconut Watercolor Cheek Gelee in Pink Escape goes on the cheeks, and sometimes a dab on the lips followed by The Honest Company Lavender Mint Lip Balm. A quick curl, then a couple coats of Pacifica Stellar Gaze Mascara in Stardust. The small plastic container is a sample of RMS Beauty Living Luminizer, which is amazing. I put just a little in the corner of my eyes when I didn’t manage to get enough sleep the night before.

After using these 18 products solely for a month, I’ve realized that not only is this simple set of products more than enough to meet my daily beauty needs, BUT my skin and hair are healthier when I keep things minimal. I’m going to continue to edit out products I don’t use regularly or find more multi-use items. After seeing my pared-down product line, do you feel like you could free up some space on your counter? Or do you already keep your beauty products pretty minimal. I would love to hear from you! Thanks for reading!

xoxo Lauren

  1. Hi Lauren!! Greetings from the YouTube world 🙂 it’s been a while since I’ve read a blog since I do most of my research on YT. I loved this post and the beautiful simplicity your beauty routine entails. How do you like the Pacifica mascara? I would love to switch to a greener mascara, and so far I’ve only tried Josie Maran’s argan mascara with no luck. Can’t wait to catch up with more of your posts 🙂

    • Hey Jenn! Glad you decided to check out my blog as I am LOVING your YouTube channel especially the morning chats. The Pacifica is decent – it lengths a little and defines, but it does smudge a bit by the end of the day so I probably won’t be repurchasing. I’ve heard Kjaer Weis and Lilo make the best safe mascaras so they’re next on my list to try!
