Updating an All-Seasons Capsule Wardrobe

A little over a year ago, I did a little bit of fantasizing about the future of my wardrobe. I have been practicing a seasonal wardrobe since fall 2013, and while I enjoyed how seasonal capsules had helped me find my style, edit out the unloved pieces, and simplify getting dressed in the morning, I thought I was ready to start creativing a more cohesive wardrobe that could be utilized year-round with minimal pieces.

Screen Shot 2017-09-29 at 4.12.22 PMSince that time when I ruminated on my realistic dream wardrobe, I have actually started to put those thoughts into action. My entire wardrobe has been on display in my closet since early spring. In total, I currently have 40 items of clothing and shoes in my closet. For transparency sake, I have another 15 pieces in the office clothing that I am planning to donate/sell. I’m still about 90% sure all those pieces will be leaving, but don’t be surprised if something ends up finding it’s way back into my closet (cough cough….Lilly Pulitzer dresses….cough cough).

And while those pieces pretty much do the job, I have some gaps that need to be filled now that I’m cycling out pieces that no longer fit, are too worn, or that I’m just not excited to wear. The list above is an updated version of my all seasons, capsule wardrobe. The items marked with a asterisk have not been purchased yet, but they feel like the right choices to fit my current wardrobe needs.

While I would love to get to the point where I feel my wardrobe is “done”, I know that as soon as I fill all the gaps, something will need to be replaced or I’ll realizing something isn’t meeting my needs and the process starts all over again. But I do enjoy knowing that most of the items on my purchase list are just meant to replace something that has worn out.

Example – I owned a pair of Lauren Conrad/Kohl’s leopard print flats for years; see them here in this past capsule post. But they were worn to pieces with all the faux leather cracking, the pieces coming unglued, and the soles wearing out. I loved those flats, so I know replacing them with another pair of leopard print flats is the right choice for my wardrobe.

It almost feels like grocery shopping. When you run out of rice, you buy more rice. And when your white jeans shrink in the dryer, you buy another pair of white jeans (this time with more room to accommodate dryer shrinkage).

Are you experimenting with a seasonal or year-round capsule wardrobe? Would you like, but you just don’t know where to start? Comment below with your questions; I would love to help you simplify your closet!

Thanks for reading!

xoxo Lauren

  1. Your list is pretty much perfect – a good range of items that seem like they can be worn together or on their own. I’m doing the Project 333 challenge from now until October as my aim is to eventually have a capsule wardrobe that works all year round with about 50 pieces. I do know, however that it’ll be more than that as I have shoes, dresses and coats that are just not practical for everyday use but I’ll keep them because I love them. But I’m ok with that. As long as my everyday wear gets reduced I’m happy to have a few extras for special occasions.
